Same for any spoons or spatulas that you used. Oh my goodness, is there anything better? Ginger, cinnamon, cloves combined with a little molasses, and you have the beginnings of something amazing. They use organic ingredients, and they use high-quality ingredients, free of gums, soy, and refined sugar. Which you can definitely taste in the finished product. Wow Bakes was perhaps my favorite discovery in LA. I had heard of most of the bakeries on this list beforehand, but Wow Bakes was one that I discovered either in LA, or right before we arrived. It’s a one woman operation – her name is Sharon – and she bakes all of the amazing sourdough baked goods herself in Santa Monica. Kirari West was our first stop in L.A., and it set a pretty high bar for all the other bakeries in L.A.

For those diagnosed with celiac disease — where gluten proteins found in ingredients like wheat trigger a damaging immune response — cooking at home can be safer than dining out. I grew up in Germany, the land of gingerbread houses. It was part of the magic of the holidays. These houses were made with real, flavorful gingerbread. We cut out the side walls and roof pieces, and then constructed the houses from scratch. Every year, one of our favorite traditions is making homemade gingerbread houses for the holidays.
Sugar Soft Iced Cookies
Cover the dough with parchment paper and roll dough out until it’s about 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch thick. Don’t worry if your dough is a wee bit larger than the paper. Divide the one of the dough round in half.
Royal Icing:
I find it much easier to decorate the gingerbread walls and roof pieces before assembling the house, and I would recommend you do the same. I use an orange-flavoured royal icing as the icing decoration and "glue", and it is very easy to make. I loved making this gluten free gingerbread house. Not only was it beautiful to look at and DELICIOUS to eat, but making it was quite therapeutic and a fun way to unleash my creativity. Next time I’ll let my three year old get involved, as she was chomping at the bit to have a go with the icing bottle. This is a lovely activity for kids and adults alike.

By sliding the parchment onto the baking sheet, you won’t disturb the cut outs, ensuring they are the correct shape for assembling your house later on in the process. No matter what it looks like, your gingerbread house will be perfect.
The photos aren’t great, but here are some of my old photos for some gingerbread house inspiration. The licorice Rips make great shingles for a roof and the pond is still one of my favorites. It’s made with blue gel frosting, but you can also make one with melted blue Jolly Rancher candies similar to how we made windows for our new house with starlight mints. We loved Twice Baked, which is south of LA in Long Beach, CA. It’s in an unassuming strip mall, but don’t let the location fool you. Twice Baked makes some pretty incredible gluten free products, from breads and pizza crusts to our favorites, the bear claws and apple turnovers. We were eyeing the croissants, but were already full from earlier bakery stops. Karma Baker is a bakery in Westlake Village, which isn’t really in L.A., but it’s worth including in this list anyway.
The full recipe card is at the end of the post, this is just an overview of the steps.
